Lake Deaton at Home

So we approach the end of Psalms. Scholars divide the book of Psalms in 5 different sections. Psalm 107 begins the last section which mainly contains Psalms of thanksgiving; and so it begins appropriately, “O give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; for his steadfast love endures forever.” Two major reasons to give thanks: God is good AND God’s love endures forever. Then this Song enters into describing several groups of people and expresses how God has brought restoration to them:

• Some who wandered in desert wastes finding no way to an inhabited town (v.4.)/For he satisfies the thirsty and the hungry he fills with good things. (v.9).
• Some who sat in darkness and in gloom, prisoners in misery and in irons (v.10)/For he shatters the doors of bronze and cuts in two the bars of iron. (v.16).
• Some who were sick through their sinful ways, and because of their iniquities endured affliction (v. 17)/ He sent out his word and healed them, and delivered them from destruction. (v21)
• Some went down to the sea in ships, doing business on the mighty waters; (v.23)/He made the storm be still, and the waves of the sea were hushed. (v.29).

To me it resonates to the story of Jesus walking into the synagogue and reading from Isaiah: “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, for he has anointed me to bring Good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim that captives will be released, that the blind will see, that the oppressed will be set free, and that the time of the Lord’s favor has come” (Luke 4:16-19). God is a God who restores, heals, sets the captive free, and heals our wounds. Today, see if you find yourself among any of those groups. Maybe you have been restored. Maybe you have much to be thankful for and you know that God is good and his love endures forever.
