Summer of Love – July 20

Ephesians 4:1-3

Over the past few weeks, I have been reminded of one of life’s greatest treasures: No man is an island. That’s easy to say, but when it gets down to where the rubber meets the road, I often like to think I, like a lot of others, want to forge my own path and make my own way. I like to be there to help others, but when it comes to my own needs it is just easier to do it myself. But then you come up with family loss and sickness and again are reminded that we are desperate for the help, love, and support of others to get by in this life.

I think this is the basis from which Paul is writing in today’s lesson. By this point in Paul’s ministry, he knows that he is only as good as the people around him. Writing this letter from prison Paul is dependent on those who are taking care of him. Paul also knows that to begin to work in community, to be united as the Body of Christ, takes humility and patience because we each have faults that flair up when faced with communal life.

Today as you watch the video think about the ways you have grown in learning to live and love in community. Also think about where you struggle at making allowances for other people’s faults.

So What Activity OR Discussion Questions: Take time today, in prayer, to think about where you have been blessed by others who have been patient with you throughout your life and because of their patience helped you grow and expand. Then think about how you are living this out with others. Are you doing well at being patient with others or do you need some improvement?

Blessings,
