Jingle: An Advent Devotional: Sunday, November 27, 2022

Writer: Kristyne Young

Ministry: Online Pastor

Scripture: Isaiah 2:4-5

Come, descendants of Jacob,
let us walk in the light of the Lord!

Those who know me know that I tend to get up on my soapbox at this time of the year and Grinch up everyone’s fun by yelling, “It is not Christmas yet!  Christmas does not start until sundown on December 24th; this is Advent!  Advent is a season of anticipation and waiting, a time to slow down.”

However, this year I am feeling a bit different.  I am tired of waiting.  I have been waiting for six months for my house to be finished.  This year I can count many times that I have had to stop and wait and be patient.  I thought the house would be ready in July, September, and November.  Each time getting excited at the possibilities, and then I had to stop, wait and be patient.  I have been in anticipation this whole time, and it seems like the time has moved so slowly.  I have learned how to be patient.  I have learned how to appreciate the little things.  I have learned that there is joy to be found, even when waiting.

I am excited that on December 2, my house will be “mostly” finished, and my furniture and boxes will finally be arriving.  Hooray!  No more waiting!  And this idea of no more waiting has got me thinking; maybe my soapbox message from the past has been a little too Grinchy.

So this year, let’s reframe how we look at Advent.  Let us actively walk in the light of the Lord!  Let us dance with jingling joy as we anticipate the coming of Christ.  Let’s wait, but not just passively wait; no, let’s wait passionately as we share the love of Christ with the world.  Let’s be change-makers, people of peace.  Let us joyfully shine the hope-filled light of the Lord during this Advent Season.

Gracious God, make us new.  Help us to see this season in a new way.  Allow us to dance.  Allow us to walk in your light.  Let this be a season of an abundance of joy, love, hope, and peace.  And let us be people of action who shine your light into the world.

  1. How will you make this Advent season more than in the past?
  2. What have you been to “Grinchy” about in your life?

  1. Dear Pastor Kristyne,

This was so beautiful and inspiring, full of light and hope and joy! It was just bouncing off you everywhere, with Jesus shining through it.

For all you have waited for this year, may your waiting for Jesus Christ be the most joyful season! Thank you for that spirited message.

Those little guys are truly blessed to have you there with them!

      1. Thank you for sharing! I will be praying daily for Thom and your family.

  2. Thank you for your beautiful message. This has been a year of waiting for me also Pastor Kristyne. The good waiting was for the birth of my granddaughter which occurred on April 28, 2022. She is beautiful, healthy, and one of the biggest joys of my life. Sadly, I continue to wait for the Lord to open the door for my husband who is in late stage Alzheimers. He has been in Memory Care for 16 months and can no longer do anything for himself. He is existing but not living. Whether he knows me when I visit or not is something God knows, not me. I know the Lord has a plan for him and for our family….He is teaching me daily about faith, patience, and trust as well as a constant reminder that I am NOT in control. Asking for your prayers too for Thom and our family as we continue our journey and enter Advent, during which time we all wait with wonderful anticipation to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ.
