Jingle: An Advent Devotional – Tuesday, December 20, 2022

Writer: Linda Jorden

Scripture:  Luke 1:39-56

Mary, a virgin, and a betrothed young lady had just been told by Gabriel that she would be a mother of God’s child!!  That’s a lot to mentally process – to rethink what the future will hold. In God’s plan, Mary was directed to a special person who could help with that:  her cousin, Elizabeth.

With excitement, love, and joy, Elizabeth greeted Mary!  Just what she needed at this time.  Together, they could plan for their futures with new infants.  They could discuss God’s love. Elizabeth’s joy could be felt by Mary.  She was the mentor Mary needed!

God saw that Mary needed a friend and mentor and provided that for her.  I’m sure Elizabeth provided the positive influence that helped Mary get through what could have been such an anxious time.

There have been many times God has placed “just the right person” in my life.  I have pondered people’s words, on occasion, and thought ‘I needed to hear that today.’  God often uses others to speak to us.  What a blessing that can be – be open to listening.

One instance I can recall was when the opportunity arose for our family to move out of state – away from all our family. To me, it was daunting. I was thinking of all the negative things about moving -helping 3 children reacclimate to schools, friends, sports – and no family.  A good friend was moving during this time (she’d had 3 other moves) and said, “I look at moving as a new adventure.”  Her words helped me to change my attitude!  I began looking at possibilities instead of difficulties.

Friendships – and words of love and encouragement – can help and shape others.  God has placed us together in his divine plan. Listen to his voice through the holy spirit and his messengers.

Daily Prayer:  Lord, help us to have open ears to listening to your voice – through our thoughts and others’ words.  Help us also to be encouragers and comforters to others as they walk this journey of life.  Use us as you need.  Amen.

Discussion/Reflection Questions:

  1. Are you listening for God’s voice speaking to you through others’ words?
  2. Have you ever been an “Elizabeth”, a mentor, to someone?  Or has someone been that for you?
  3. Have you ever felt prompted (by the Holy Spirit) to say something to someone?
