December 23 – Promises: An Advent Devotional

Scripture:  Philippians 4:6-9

Some joys are easy. There’s joy in holding a newborn, receiving good results from a test, seeing a sunset, or hearing a meaningful song. All these things bring joy to your heart.   Yes, sometimes experiencing joy is easy.

However, sometimes joy isn’t obvious; it’s almost hidden. I witnessed this recently as a facility worker cleaned the CLC floor. It looked like a tedious job, and it showed on his face. It was apparent he had much more important jobs he needed to complete.   He was a bit grumpy about this mundane and boring task.

As I watched, I shared something he needed to be aware of.  Laying below the gray flooring being swept, there is, of course, a concrete slab.  But….on that concrete are dozens upon dozens of written prayers and scripture. Prayers that all who enter be blessed. Prayers that the Lord’s grace and love be abundant. Prayers the Holy Spirit fill the room. There is scripture for pastors, leaders, employees, congregants, and visitors.

He was deep in thought as I walked away.  I did notice, though, that his face had turned into one of serenity. Now, with each sweep of his broom, he found peace and joy.  In everything you do, find joy. Peace will follow.

Daily Prayer:  Lord of Love and Peace, lead me through this day with joy in my heart and the will to find peace in every situation I face. Lead me to share your love with everyone I encounter and leave them with a hopeful and joy-filled day. Amen.

Discussion/Reflection Questions:

  1. Have you ever thought of a mundane task as being joyful?
  2. When in an unpleasant or difficult situation, do you use prayer and scripture to seek joy in every situation?
