I have found in my life that when I have someone to talk to about my problems, it takes some of the burden from my shoulders.
This last December, I noticed a freckle on my arm. I do not know why I noticed it; I just kept on “seeing” it. As the winter moved into spring, I kept looking at the freckle and how it was changing. I often thought to myself that I maybe needed to go to a doctor to get it looked at. However, I always had a good excuse not to go. I was too busy. The doctor was too far. Maybe I was overreacting. I even made an appointment in March to go to the doctor, only to cancel it. Finally, in May, I decided to finally go. When I walked into the office and the doctor looked at it, she looked at me with very serious eyes and said, “I am glad you came in.” They biopsied it, and she sent me home, telling me not to worry and that I would hear from her soon.
I must tell you that the hour-long drive back home was awful. All I could think about was how I had waited to go to the doctor. What if it was bad? I would have no one to blame but myself. I got home, parked my car, and found my husband, and I just cried. We went on a walk, and I just spilled out all the worry and guilt that I was feeling.
I have found in my life that when I have someone to talk to about my problems, it takes some of the burden from my shoulders.
It was good to have my husband reassure me, but it was also good to have God to talk to. Over the next days I spent a lot of time walking and talking with God. Eventually God took all of my guilt and worry.
Talking to each other is important, but talking to God is the most important. Sometimes, when we talk with God, we are happy; other times, we are sad, and there are even moments when we are angry. We might even cry out HOW LONG? How long until this season is over, how long until I know what to do, how long until the doctor calls me? HOW LONG?!
It is from God that we receive our strength, gain our courage, let go of our guilt and regrets, and find our joy. Don’t forget to talk to God today and every day.
So What: Do you know someone who might need a listening ear? Make a commitment to visit that person this week. At the end of your visit, invite that person to pray with you.
