Summer Study – Day 9

June 13, 2024

Read Psalm 16

The other day, I came home from a challenging day at school and decided to go upstairs and quilt instead of taking my daily walk with the dogs.  My routine would be to come in the house, leash up the dogs, and go for a 30-minute walk.  The walk is to exercise the dogs, but it is also for me to connect with God.  It has become a vital part of each day, a chance to refocus after a busy day.  Again, on this day, I thought I would go upstairs and quilt.  I love to quilt.  And sometimes, I don’t get enough time to do it.

So, I greeted the dogs, went upstairs, and started to sew, and almost from the start, things began to go wrong. After about 30 minutes, I found myself in an uglier state than when I had arrived home. I slammed my fist on the table and said, “Dammit, dammit, dammit.”  Clearly, my head was not in the right space.  I got up, leashed up the dogs, and went on an extra-long walk to have an extra-long talk with God.  Upon returning, life felt more manageable, though I stayed away from my sewing room for a few days.

Sometimes, we let other things in our lives become like little gods that we worship.  When we put God first and then file all else under God, we can live the type of life the Psalmist describes.

So What: What little gods do you worship in your life?  How can you work to put King Jesus above all?

  1. You hit the nail on the head for me when it comes to technology becoming a” “ little god” In my life. It’s so easy to get distracted from all the important things in life because of this wonderful little device in my hand, which is so easy to overuse or use irresponsibly. I absolutely love the idea of fasting From technology. I know I can’t ignore my device totally, and I love the joy and goodness it does bring to me from communicating with my kids to Bible study. However, I spend way, way too much time with technology that keeps me from God’s word, reflection, my family and friends, and being productive in ways that are fruitful. Thanks, Kristine!

  2. Sorry for misspelling your name, Kristyne!!!

    1. You really hit the nail on the head for me when you mentioned technology being a “little god” for some of us. There are so many times that I abuse this little device in my hand to pursue mindless entertainment when I could be spending my time with God, family, friends…. I know that fasting totally from my phone and all it’s applications may not necessarily be good and would probably be irresponsible, But my intent to fast from the mindless entertainment based side of it for most of my day. I know that sounds like a shallow goal, but for me it’s really not. Thanks for the inspiration, Kristyne!

PS. I made a reply and misspelled your name earlier, but it looks like the whole reply was lost. That is what my first reply that you received was about… I had misspelled your name earlier. Lol.
