Praise the Lord, all you nations.
Praise him, all you people of the earth.
For his unfailing love for us is powerful;
the Lord’s faithfulness endures forever.
John Wesley tells us that this psalm is a song that allows us to rest into God – to discover a “cheerful confidence in God.” The words can also be translated as an experience of God’s love that is so powerful it overwhelms us.
This psalm is especially poignant for me because I remember a point in my PhD studies when I found myself adrift because I was spending so much time reading books and writing papers that I was neglecting my prayer life. After a chance encounter – or was it God reaching out to me? – I began a practice of praying this psalm day after day, and I found myself moved by the experience of our Sovereign God who is powerful and yet watches over us and loves us – coming to us wherever we are – steadfast and faithful.
I can’t help but wonder, what would happen if every morning, the first words from our lips were:
Praise the Lord, all you nations.
Praise him, all you people of the earth.
For his unfailing love for us is powerful;
the Lord’s faithfulness endures forever.
Prayer: Sovereign God,
We come before you with hearts full of gratitude and praise. Your love and faithfulness endure forever; your mercies are new every morning. We lift our voices this day to honor your holy name.
We thank you for your steadfast love, which knows no bounds and overwhelms us. Your enduring faithfulness sustains us. May we always remember to give you the praise and glory so that all the peoples of the earth and all creation may come to know and worship you. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
Peace,
Suzanne
