Day 35 – Songs of Ascents (120-134) Psalm 121
Psalm 121 New Living Translation
A song for pilgrims ascending to Jerusalem.
1 I look up to the mountains—
does my help come from there?
2 My help comes from the Lord,
who made heaven and earth!
3 He will not let you stumble;
the one who watches over you will not slumber.
4 Indeed, he who watches over Israel
never slumbers or sleeps.
5 The Lord himself watches over you!
The Lord stands beside you as your protective shade.
6 The sun will not harm you by day,
nor the moon at night.
7 The Lord keeps you from all harm
and watches over your life.
8 The Lord keeps watch over you as you come and go,
both now and forever.
Today, we look at the Songs of Ascents (120-134), particularly Psalm 121. Church patriarch Augustine said, “The one who sings prays twice.” These psalms of ascent are known as liturgical psalms, so they are indeed worship songs. As we delve into Psalm 121, we discover the unique ways in which it can inspire us to remember what singing adds to our praise and worship of God. As we listen to the rhythm and repetition of the Psalm with an ear toward the music and poetry, it helps us to express our joy and praise of God, joins us together in community as we sing together, and connects us emotionally with God and each other.
Prayer:
Loving Creator,
We lift our eyes to the hills, knowing that our help comes from you, the maker of heaven and earth. You are our constant protector, watching over us day and night, never slumbering or sleeping.
As we journey through life, help us to trust in your unfailing guidance and protection. Remind us that you are our shade at our right hand, shielding us from the scorching heat and the dangers of the night.
Strengthen our faith and help us to rely on your promises. Fill us with your peace, knowing that you are with us every step of the way.
In your holy name, we pray. Amen.
Peace,
Suzanne
