December 15 – Advent 2024

Writer’s Name: Rick Elliott

Writer’s Ministry: Lake Deaton Worship Director

Scripture: John 6:1-13

My grandmother, Nanny Elliott, was a woman of faith. She worked hard all her life and loved even harder, raising five children with the added blessing of 10 grandchildren. She worked at a textile mill all her life, never earning more than $5.00 an hour. However, she trusted God and carefully made her earnings go further than any of us could comprehend.

She made up for what she lacked in wealth with her work ethic and a huge heart for loving everyone around her.  Upon entering her house for a visit, you were immediately greeted with the blessing of leftovers and a glass of sweet tea.  This was always accompanied by a conversation with her around the dining room table. She was a counselor, seamstress, gardener, housekeeper, and repairer to all who knew her well.

However, above all, Nanny loved the Lord. If you came to visit her, she would share much about what God was doing in her life, and of course, she would want to know everything He was doing in yours as well. She loved well and served God faithfully, giving Him the praise in all things.

This hymn, written by Kittie L. Suffield in 1924, reflects a major lesson found in the Book of John.

Refrain:
Little is much when God is in it!
Labor not for wealth or fame;
There’s a crown, and you can win it,
If you go in Jesus’ name.

Daily Prayer: Lord, help me to acknowledge you each day from sunup to sundown and stay connected to your will for my life in all things.

Discussion/Reflection Questions:

  1. Staying connected to God throughout each day is essential to our spiritual fitness.
  2. Daily acts of kindness and compassion to others is the Jesus way.

    Beautifully written, Rick! It sounds like your grandmother was an awesome witness and example for you to become the strong man of faith that we see in you everyday. Thanks for sharing!

  2. Lessons we can learn from today. God bless our Grammas

  3. Rick, your devotion reminds me of my Grandmother, “Granny” from Columbus, Ohio. She was loving and kind but I mostly remember her great love for the Lord. She lived to be 98, telling everyone that she met, she just couldn’t wait to go to live with Jesus.
