Christmas has always been an adventure in our family. It was especially difficult for Bill and I and our three children. We lived the furthest away from our families. Since I was a nurse, many times I had to work. We were always expected to be there. Needless to say, it was stressful. We vowed to never put that kind of pressure on our children.
Through the years, we have spent Christmas with one or two of our adult children but not all three since our youngest daughter moved to Hawaii in 1999. We have spent Christmas in New York City, Philadelphia, Maui, and Annapolis. One Christmas Bill and I found ourselves alone. Amy and her family spent the
holiday with her in-laws in Florida. Danielle was in Hawaii and working. Brian spent the holiday with his fiancé’s family. Bill and I were living in Philadelphia at the time and decided to spend Christmas in Cape May, NJ. We love the beach and being in our happy place made the disappointment of not celebrating with our children easier. The best, most meaningful, part of our trip came on Christmas Eve. We were driving along and spotted this tiny Methodist Church about to start its children’s Christmas Eve pageant. Some of our best memories are seeing our
children participate in our church’s pageant. We were so happy that we spotted that church. It was set back from the road and we had never seen it in our many trips to Cape May. By paying attention, we were guided to the true meaning of Christmas.
Prayer: Lord, today we thank you for our family members wherever they might be.
Action: Call a family member and let them know how much you love them.
